5 Things to do in Bangkok with a Toddler
I’ve been to Bangkok several times - first as a young backpacker on my own, then with friends, for work, and then a few years later with Josh. I feel like I know this city, I love this city, and I have seen so many sides to this city.
But then I came to Bangkok with our 2-year-old, and I realised there was so much more to Bangkok than I had previously explored. I found a new appreciation for things I had done before, and she showed me the city in a whole new light, making me fall in love with it even more.
So, if you are coming to Bangkok with a toddler, please don’t write it off as a gateway to the jungle in the north, or the beaches in the south - Bangkok has so much to offer families! Here are some of our favourite things to do in Bangkok with a toddler:
Bangkoks version of Central Park - Limpini Park!
This huge 142-acre park is right in the heart of Bangkok, and an awesome place to come with kids where they can run free. There is a children’s playground, a big lake to walk around (or rent boats to row), and lots of trees to provide shade from the Bangkok sun. The park is also home to over 400 monitor lizards (some as long as 3 meters!) - we loved walking around looking out for them, and our toddler loved having an open green space to explore.
The malls aren’t just for adults!
This might sound strange, but the malls in Bangkok are epic - and they are air-conditioned (definitely a plus in our books), and they are definitely a great thing to do in Bangkok with a toddler.
Most of them have children’s soft play areas (some even have water parks in them!), and they are all over the city. We spent a morning at PlayMondo in CentralwOrld (in Siam), and our toddler absolutely loved it.
Toddler-Friendly Transport in Bangkok - The Sky Train and Tuk-Tuks!
We love exploring a city on public transport, and the skytrain in Bangkok is such a cool unique way to get around. What might seem like a mundane commute to us adults, can be a super exciting activity for a 2-year-old. The views are great, and our toddler absolutely loved it.
We also really appreciated the respite from the heat, and there’s something cool about getting around like a local.
I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but I always associate Bangkok with Tuk-Tuk’s, and even as an adult I find them so much fun to ride in. You have to get from one place to another, so why not make it fun?! At first our toddler wasn’t sure what to make of it - and I get that it might have seemed terrifying, but after her first ride she was hooked and loved zipping around the streets of Bangkok with the wind in her hair.
Explore one (or several) of the temples in Bangkok!
Did you know that Bangkok has over 400 temples?! I thought I had seen a lot of them but when I learnt this stat I realised I still had a very long way to go.
We only visited two of them with our toddler on our recent trip to Bangkok, but it was such a beautiful (and hopefully educational) experience. As we are early risers, we luckily arrived before anyone else and our 2-year-old was able to walk (or let’s be honest - run), and explore freely, and we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.
There is something really special about teaching your child about other cultures and religions, and it makes it so much more real for them when they are immersed it in.
Children’s Discovery Museum
This place was highly recommended by so many people, but we didn’t actually make it! On the website, they say they are open 7 days a week, but when we arrived we were told they are only open weekends because of c*vid.
We were definitely disappointed because it looks absolutely incredible so if you do go - let us know what you think! We’ve got it pretty high on our list for our next trip to Bangkok…
